According to Gianni Borgna in History of the Italian Song, the song Reginella Campagnola (Country Princess) was born on a foggy evening in the fall of ’38 in Porta Venezia. Its title was originally “Fior Maiella” (after a mountain in Abruzzo), and under that name it was performed for the first time in a ballroom in Milan. Afterwards, Di Lazzaro proposed a change in the title.
In 1940, the song was made famous in the US as “The Woodpeckersong” with lyrics by Harold Adamson and an arrangement by Glenn Miller.

In a time in which Mussolini was directing Italians to look towards the countryside where peasants were healthy and beautiful, Mario Panzeri and Eldo Di Lazzaro, looked to the city, and wrote a song, made famous by Carlo Buti, that seemed to celebrate the opposite: the girls (“piccinina”, a Milanese term) that helped the seamstresses by delivering clothes to the ladies.
The song was made famous in the US in a translation by Harold Adamson, called “Ferryboat Serenade” sung by the Andrew Sisters. It was also recorded by Duke Ellington.
